Develop your abilities to become a highly skilled music and audio producer.

As part of your course you’ll:

  • Hone your skills in the creative, technical and compositional aspects of music production

You’ll have access to software such as Logic Pro, Cubase, Adobe Audition, MAX MSP and Synthmaker. Your specialist modules might require you to use Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Unreal and other industry standard software.

This course is accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support) which encourages the delivery of workshops and lectures from industry professionals. A placement option and your final year project will provide you with opportunities to work with industry partners. Artist in Residence Programme
The Artist in Residence programme gives our students an opportunity to work with professional artists and gives them a taste of what is it like to work on a professional music project. We have welcomed artists Chris T-T, Ian Prowse, I Monster, Tom Williams and Utah Saints.

GCSEs

GCSE English Language at Grade 4 or above (Grade C for GCSEs taken before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

Access to HE Diploma

Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points.

T Levels

Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points, including a C or above on the core.

Our contextual admissions criteria are:

  • Over the age of 21 on the 1st of September before the course starts.

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. What you'll learn

Focus on approaches to developing, writing down and communicating your musical ideas and intentions to others. You will practically apply these skills through composing, notating and presenting these ideas in formats which musicians and music producers could then extend and develop in a studio or live performance setting.

Explore a range of perspectives, approaches and techniques relevant to computer-based music composition and performance.

Study contemporary musical genres, histories and associated music subcultures to deepen your understanding of what political, economic, sociological, technological, ethical and legal factors impact upon the music being produced and the industries that support it.

Learn to listen critically to acoustic spaces, audio equipment and audio material. You will explore acoustic principles and the human auditory system and build on your learning through workshops and tutorials.

The first in a series of studio recording modules, this module will introduce you to and develop your fundamental, practical audio production skills. You will also learn about the hardware and software systems used in audio recording and establish good working practices for audio projects.

This module will introduce the technologies and principles that underpin analogue and digital music signals and systems. Through workshops and tutorials you will develop knowledge and skills required in the creative audio industries.

Sandwich Year

You will normally spend a whole year in placement. For this year you will be charged a reduced fee of £1385.

The following are also included in the cost of your course:

  • Free wifi via eduroam
  • Skills workshops and resources
  • Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
  • Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
  • Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee.However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay).We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available fromthe laptop lockerslocated in the libraries.

Reverb Chamber Music and Sound students at Leeds School of Arts use omnidirectional sound sources in the reverb chamber to measure absorption and reverberation.

Anechoic Chamber Music and Sound students at Leeds School of Arts use the Anechoic chamber to analyse the design characteristics of audio equipment, and for psychoacoustic testing to determine peoples perception of sounds.

    Our specialist recording studio has an observation level control room and industry-standard equipment fitted, including a Solid State Logic AWS 948 mixing console, Neumann microphones and PMC speakers. The studio also utilises the Avid Pro Tools HDX audio interface and Avid MTRX system which runs throughout most of our music studios.

    Specialist lab for producing and analysing sound data to better understand and develop equipment, music and other audio. Equipped with the latest in industry-standard software and hardware.

    A suite of testing spaces that allow for the conducting of a range of experiments and sound explorations. The reverb chamber allows for real-world reverb effects and precise measurement, whilst the anechoic chamber completely absorbs these reflections to be able to isolate the sound travelling away from a source.

    The perfect space for solo or group instrument playing or singing. Our rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including the Dante audio network and a rolling rack which features a Yamaha QL1 audio mixer, Yamaha PA system, rehearsal backline and Dynaudio reference monitor loudspeakers.

    Leslie Silver is home to three lecture theatres and eight high-spec computer training rooms. It's also where you'll find our Sheila Silver Library, providing students and staff an effective and inspiring learning environment, as well as a range of support and resources to support your studies.
