💡Have a storyboard ready. A storyboard helps you brainstorm faster and organize your content from the objective right to the conclusion. It also makes collaboration and reviews easier, because others can see a visual representation of what to expect in your video content.

2 Choose the right video editing software and format
Once you have your plan, you need to decide on the right video editing software and format for your online course. There are many video editing tools available, from free and simple to paid and professional, so you can choose the one that best fits your level of expertise, budget, and preferences. Popular video editing software include iMovie for Mac users, Windows Movie Maker for Windows users, Camtasia for screen recording and editing, Adobe Premiere Pro for advanced editing features, and InVideo for online video editing. Additionally, it is important to choose the right video format for your online course as this affects the quality, size, and compatibility of your video files. Common video formats include MP4 for high quality and compatibility, MOV for Apple devices and applications, AVI for Windows devices and applications, WMV for smaller file sizes, and FLV for web streaming.

Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Canva are great for editing videos. Capcut is great for editing mobile videos for social media (tiktok, instagram, facebook). MP4 will be one of the most common types of video formats that you will see. Before you begin shooting your video, be sure to see size/format recommendations and adhere to them. If you use the wrong format, your video may not transfer over or may display incorrectly.

3 Cut and trim your video clips
Cutting and trimming are essential video editing techniques that help you remove unwanted or unnecessary parts of your video, such as pauses, errors, or repetitions. To cut and trim your video clips, you need to import them into your video editing software, then drag and drop them onto the timeline. After that, use the cut or split tool to separate your video clips into segments. To remove the segments you don't want, use the delete or ripple delete tool. Finally, rearrange your video clips on the timeline to create a logical flow.

Don't forget the power of micro-cuts!While removing lengthy pauses is crucial, consider refining your message further by eliminating even subtle hesitations or filler words like "um" or "like." This keeps your delivery crisp and keeps learners engaged. For example, if you stumble over a sentence, simply cut out the stumble and rejoin the clean version of the sentence. These micro-cuts are seamless and keep the focus on your core message, creating a more polished and professional feel for your course.

Before you cut, make notes.Compare your script with what you've shot. Rearrange and rewrite the script as necessary. Once you're happy with how it flows, then start your editing! This process will save you time and make your video more cohesive and interesting.

4 Add transitions, effects, and captions
Once you have your video clips in order, you can add transitions, effects, and captions to enhance your video content. Transitions refer to the changes between video clips, like fades, wipes, or slides. Effects modify the video clips with filters, colors, or animations. Captions are text overlays like titles, subtitles, or labels. To add transitions, effects, and captions, select the video clip or segment you want to modify and apply the transition, effect, or caption from the menu or library. Adjust the duration, position, and style of the transition, effect, or caption before previewing it on the preview window. Repeat this process for other video clips or segments.

💡Don't go too big on the transitions and effects. Too many transitions and effects can confuse your viewers, unless it's for a specific purpose. Then you would have to add a disclaimer for it saying "lights/effects might affect viewers, etc."

In many cases, you only need a simple transition.Sometimes, jump cuts work great too. If your video is fast paced or you want to add a comedic effect, consider the jump cat.Plan your content ahead so your transitions are smooth. This means have a good script, at least an outline, before you shoot. This step will also help you retain your views longer.

5 Review and refine your video content
The final step of video editing is to review and refine your video content before publishing. This process is essential to ensure the quality, accuracy, and consistency of your video content. To do this, watch your video from start to finish and check for any errors, gaps, or inconsistencies. Make the necessary changes or improvements before exporting it in the desired format and quality. Lastly, test your video on different devices and platforms.

The quality of your final cut depends on your source materials. And your source materials will be great if you write a great script. That's the most important part of creating your video course. The biggest work comes before you start filming. So put a lot of effort into planning your course.

From a strategic planning perspective, we can emphasize the importance of aligning video content editing with the specific objectives and needs of the online course and its audience. This entails clearly identifying desired learning outcomes and ensuring that the video content is designed to achieve those goals. Additionally, it could be mentioned the need to consider coherence and continuity among different modules or sections of the course, ensuring that the video content flows logically and coherently for an optimal learning experience.
