She was born on a farm in Superior, Colorado on March 19, 1924 to Leon Louis Wattelet and Louise Mary (LeComte) Wattelet. During World War II she worked at a defense plant making bullets. After marriage she was a telephone operator in Boulder, Colorado. In the days before color photographs she colored by hand the black and white photos taken by her husband who was a professional photographer. There she was employed by Montgomery Ward as a cashier and then a staffer in Human Resources, QVC, the U.S. Census, and Bank of America (formerly Bank of Clearwater), retiring as a loan clerk. She loved the natural beauty and wildlife of Florida, enjoying collecting shells on the beach with which she created dioramas and growing orchids and bromeliads on her porch. Her love of organ music, ignited by her older brother, led her to take lessons with the renowned theatre organist Terry Charles, who became a dear friend. In 1998 she relocated to Greenwich, New York to be near her daughters. She continued her love of birdwatching and found gardening with native plants to be rewarding. She loved to cook for family and friends, making wonderful meals based on her French heritage. Patricia R. Pate - January 04, 1929 - May 16, 2021

Departed: 05/16/2021 (Cambridge)

Obituary Preview: Greenwich-Patricia died peacefully on Sunday morning age 92. She was the loving wife of Howard Pate for 66 years who died before her in 2017. Beloved mother to Andrew Pate (Stacey Nute), David Pate (Beth Pate), Judith Pate and Valerie Ardron. Beloved grandmother to Ryan Ardron, Christopher Ardron, and Alex Unrau (died 2012). And great grandmother to Quinton. Her sister Betty Miller died in 2013.

Patricia was born in Middlesex England in 1929. She lost her mother at 18 months of age and was raised by her stepmother until she and her sister Betty were old enough to move into their own flat, when Patricia worked for Abbotts Wood Wool company. Wood wool was the early equivalent to styrofoam packaging today. She met Howard in her early twenties when he invited her home to see his TV, when there was only one channel, the BBC. After marrying they moved to Romford, Essex and started a family. In 1957 Howard and Patricia emigrated with 3 small children to LI, NY where they lived temporarily at Brookhaven National Lab and subsequently settled in East Patchogue, NY. Patricia was a dedicated and loving mother ultimately raising four children. After experiencing shortages and rationing during the war, she made a fine art running the household, with a routine to rival a British train schedule. She was a great baker and is remembered for her fine pastry and especially her fruit cake, blackberry and apple and lemon meringue pie. Patricia loved her garden and all the wildlife it attracted and she and Howard spent many hours at work tending plants and frequently visited the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.

After reading Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring Pat became an avid supporter of environmental causes especially the Environmental Defense Fund founded by Dennis Puleston, Art Cooley and others from nearby Bellport. She campaigned to address air pollution, making a presentation to the local PTA, before anyone talked about climate change.

When her youngest child was able to attend school Patricia joined the Volunteers at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and over the next 28 years contributed more than 11,500 hours to helping run the program. Early on she especially enjoyed visiting with pediatric patients, reading stories and doing art projects with them. As needs changed she became a valued and respected assistant to the director of volunteers. She made many life long friends at BMH and fellow volunteers always spoke of her warmth, can-do attitude and caring touch. She later volunteered at Mary McClellan Hospital after moving north to Washington County.

In 1992 she and Howard moved to Greenwich, NY, built a new home and once again established a garden. They enjoyed the peace and quiet and abundant wildlife and spent many hours cultivating plants and observing birds and deer and occasional foxes and other creatures. Pat and Howard made many day trips around the area. They especially liked visiting the Southern Vermont Art Center and the Clark Art Institute and enjoying a lunch at the Cafe. They enjoyed eating out at One, One, One, Steiningers, and the Dorset Inn. Patricia loved theater and often went to shows at the Sayville Musical Workshop on LI and later to Hubbard Hall in Cambridge.

More recently when she was told about Covid-19 she was not impressed, “I lived through the Blitz, the fire bombing of London”, she said. But she learned to do elbow bumps and with the dedicated care of her daughter Judith she was able to stay safe, cared for and loved at home through this past year until her passing.

Patricia will be remembered fondly by all her family and friends. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to everyone at Saratoga Hospice. Gifts in Patricia’s memory may be made to EDF (Environmental Defense Fund), 257 Park Ave. South, New York, NY 10010 (edf.org) and UNICEF USA, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038. Remember By Christina Rossetti Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you planned: Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad.

Caroline Serotta - September 22, 1928 - May 13, 2021

Departed: 05/13/2021 (Cambridge)

Obituary Preview: Caroline Rosse Serotta September 22, 1928-May 13, 2021

Cambridge-Caroline Rosse Serotta was born in Palo Alto, California in 1928. She was the 7th of nine children born to Herman Rosse and Sophia Helena Luyt, Dutch citizens living temporarily in the United States to pursue their design careers in theater and landscape respectively. By 1931, the family returned to the Netherlands, to an area just outside of The Hague, where they remained through Caroline’s formative years. She and her family barely survived the Nazi occupation of Holland (1940 - 1945). Growing up during “The War” profoundly shaped her perspectives on morality, the value of time, and human frailty and potential.

While still attending school in occupied Holland, Caroline apprenticed with a goldsmith and she soon demonstrated her considerable talent as an artisan. In 1946 she received a full scholarship to Skidmore College on a work/study program. She became an adjunct professor in the jewelry department, where some of her first students were returning GI’s needing job training in skills that could accommodate their injuries. Her lesson plans regularly required her to make visits to a hardware store. The easiest one to get to on her bike was Farmer’s Hardware, Bernie Serotta’s store. Bernie and Caroline were married on June 5th, 1951.

Over the next three decades, Caroline’s eye for design and style influenced the evolution of the family business from a traditional hardware store to a one-of-a-kind department store that brought customers from across the tri-state area for gourmet cookware, imported designer fabrics, unusual toys—including dollhouses, which she designed and were made right on the premises—and of course a well-stocked art supply department.

Caroline was a lifelong artist, designer and maker working in many mediums. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love of the arts through teaching, both in and out of the classroom. Her teaching career spanned more than thirty years, first in Galway Elementary, then in Saratoga Springs’ Caroline Street and Lake Avenue Elementary Schools, followed by Cambridge Elementary School. In Cambridge, she also shepherded countless workshops, camps, festivals, dramatic productions and community projects.

Carol had a special love for puppetry and mask-making. Many children have found peace and a love of art because Carol offered them a calm, safe and ordered place where self-expression was applauded.

Caroline remained fully engaged in life, making art, growing gardens and holding the family in her embrace. She is survived by her children: Lisa Serotta Carrino/L.Scott Carrino, Benjamin Serotta/Marcie Nover; her grandchildren Nicole Helena Goldreyer, Anna Nover Serotta, Lucas A. Goldreyer, Emily Rose Serotta, Chiara Lucia Carrino; and her great grandchildren Iver E. Goldreyer, Peter Rosse Serotta-McGlynn, Levon Miles Kramer and Ries Serotta Justin

Throughout her life, Carol strongly believed in sharing what she could with others, through her time, skills and energy or through her regular donations to the many, many causes she believed in.

The family suggests donations can be made in her memory to Community Hospice: mail checks to: 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or to a charitable organization of choice that promotes art education, the performing arts or human equity and betterment.

Wilson was always enthusiastic about introducing his customers to the latest technology, integrating computers into a client’s business, or repairing a student’s laptop and restoring their lost files. He was referred to as an “expert” by many of his customers and truly loved his job.

“Bud” loved Cambridge and its residents. He greatly enjoyed walking the sidewalks and stopping into the local shops and businesses to offer a friendly hello or strike up a conversation with a fellow town resident. Known as a local “Cambridge character”, Wilson could be found on a barstool at the Argyle Brewery on most weekends. He was a craft beer enthusiast and prided himself of having his own beer stein permanently hanging behind the bar at the brewery. Wilson enjoyed the camaraderie he encountered there and spent many hours listening the musical entertainment and joyful conversation that filled the pub. He will be remembered for his bright smile, infectious laughter, and generous spirit.

Wilson is survived by his siblings, which include: Floyd Pratt of South Cambridge, NY, Bonnie (John) Williams of Carbondale, CO, Andrea Pratt of South Cambridge, NY, Becky (Jeff) Yount of Castle Rock, CO, Steven (Barbara) Pratt of East Greenwich, NY, and several close cousins. Jonathan was born at Peekskill, NY on November 12, 1969; the youngest of five children born to Veronica (Yurcho) Piekarz and Walter Piekarz Jr. Jonathan was born with multiple challenges stemming from his primary diagnosis of Spina Bifida. So began innumerable trips to medical specialist all over the country. This younger child brought to his family many unexpected lessons of caring, compassion, and survival.

Jonathan’s family moved to upstate NY in 1973 to venture into the business of campground entrepreneurs as they developed the farmland into a small pristine place of relaxation along the banks of the Battenkill in Jackson Cambridge New York (Batttenkill Riversports). Jonathan grew up with the love of his family and the excitement of meeting new people through the campground. He was always happy when he was in the midst of the many projects and adventures the campground inspired.

His character reflected a broad knowledge base which were afforded him through his personal experiences and his association with so many people in the medical field. Entering the public school system in the seventies for a child ‘with disabilities’ was an additional challenge which Jonathan and his family faced head on and paved the way for others to follow at Cambridge Central School. Jonathan made many friends at school and graduated Cambridge Central School with the class of 1991.

Throughout his high school career and his life, Jon enjoyed being connected via the computer world. He used several computer programs including one to help his mom keep track of the business activity flow. He enjoyed making cards for all occasions on his computer for all his friends and family. Of course there were a number of games that helped pass the time. The summer time you would find Jon at the wheel of his golf cart visiting with the campers. He loved animals and had a companion dog or cat by his side, most recently Twilight had taken up the position.

Jonathan loved to attend concerts with his life time friends and nurses Wendy and Judy. He loved to bowl, he enjoyed tennis, archery, going to the mall, visiting with friends, Facebook, soaking up the sun. Jonathan most enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews growing up and the next generation as they have arrived.
